RSYM condemns Labour and Fine Gael Hypocrisy

The Republican Socialist Youth Movement condemns in the strongest possible terms the recent behaviour of local ‘representatives’ from the Labour and Fine Gael parties. The matter in question is their decision to enter into a voting alliance on Sligo Borough Council with Fianna Fáil, ensuring the latter has a prominent role in the decision making process of the Council and will also no doubt ensure a Fianna Fáil councillor enjoys the position of our first citizen at some point in the future, as Mayor of Sligo.

One of the major issues on the doorsteps in the run up to the recent local elections in Sligo was the downgrading of Sligo General Hospital and the transfer of its Cancer Services to Galway, something Labour and Fine Gael candidates cited their opposition to as one of the main issues of concern contained in their election manifestos. But in the very first council meeting post-election we once again saw the value of the word of a politician from one of the establishment parties. In jumping into bed with Fianna Fáil both Labour and Fine Gael betrayed their voters, and simultaneously exposed their lack of sincerity to the Save Our Cancer Services campaign. This has been and continues to be all about their careers. With one side of their mouth they asked the people of Sligo to reject Fianna Fáil and with the other they were plotting an alliance with them. With friends like these, the Cancer Services campaigners and the people of Sligo don’t need enemies.

Add to this the delaying tactics and refusal of party leaders Eamon Gilmore and Enda Kenny to sign a pledge to retain our much needed services and the question has to be asked, what good is it removing Fianna Fáil if the people who take their place won’t change a thing? The Republican Socialist Youth Movement urges the people of Sligo to spurn the advances of lying careerist politicians. These people are putting their career before peoples lives, and their refusal to ostracise Fianna Fáil shows a distinct lack of principals and a lack of respect for the people that voted them into their positions in the first place.

We in the RSYM would like to take this opportunity to wish the genuine Cancer campaigners the best of luck in their future endeavours and hopefully together we can win for ourselves what the establishment parties refuse to grant us, a proper and accessible Health Service in Sligo.
