Joe Higgins MEP Dublin Lisbon Debate

category dublin | eu | event notice author Wednesday September 23, 2009 13:38author by Socialist Party Report this post to the editors

Joe Higgins MEP debates the Lisbon Treaty

The Lisbon Treaty Debate - Yes or No?

For the Yes side:
Joe Costello TD, Labour Party.
Blair Horan, Charter Group of trade union leaders.

For the No side:
Joe Higgins MEP, Socialist Party.
Councillor Clare Daly, Socialist Party.

Wynn's Hotel, Middle Abbey Street, Dublin
Thursday 24th September, 7.00pm.

Joe Higgins MEP, Socialist Party is the only MEP calling for a No vote. Joe is leading the campaign for a No vote both in the media and in a series of debates all around the country. Last week 230+ turned up to hear Joe debate in Cork and over 200 attended the debate in Limerick.

This will be an important opportunity to hear the key issues at the heart of the Lisbon Treaty such as workers' rights and the militarisation of the EU debated.

Recently Blair Horan, who when he is not promoting a Yes vote for Lisbon is meant to be the general secretary of the CPSU accused Joe Higgins of deliberately falsifying the Lisbon Treaty in order to con working class people. Blair Horan accepted Joe Higgins' challenge to a public debate on the issue of Lisbon and workers' rights live on air on RTE Radio One's Drivetime.

This debate will be one of the public highlights of the Lisbon II Treaty debate - don't miss it!

I heard Joe and Blair Horan arguing on RTE. It was enlightening to hear Joe Higgins take on a union leader on the details of the Charter for Fundamental Rights and show how it won't protect our rights. I am looking forward to the debate, should see some verbal sparks flying!

We videoed some of the debate, mostly just Joe Higgins and Clare Daly, unfortunately, but some interesting stuff there including participation from the audience.
